The Chairperson's Report

The Really Cuckoo Company is a group of talented young, and not so young, people aged from over 8.

We perform musicals, pantomimes, variety shows, dances and festive celebrations.

The founding ethos of the company was to enable youngsters to have fun, learn new talents and develop existing skills, all in a safe environment and under the umbrella of Christian fellowship.

14 years on and we are still here performing on average 2 shows a year. Our current waiting list is full and I am pleased to say that old members who left to go to university have been returning over the past year or two. With our full support and encouragement they are starting to take over the leadership and management of the group - not that the original members are giving up but we are all 14 years older, and some of us weren’t that young to start with!

Although our venue hasn’t changed (we have been and always will be at St Marys Church Hall, Risca), we have helped to revamp the building with the B&Q award we won in 2005 and with the donations we make to the church from each show, benefiting other users of the hall as well.

Earlier on I commented about learning new talents.

The Cuckoos have certainly done that - they can paint scenery and props, as well as make them, and if you look at the section on the B&Q award you will see that they can knock down walls and put them up again!

I also referred to a safe environment.

We have our own child protection policy tailored specifically for Cuckoos in conjunction with the parish policy. Every parent is given an information booklet with the relevant details when their child joins us.

I have mentioned Christianity, the parish and St Mary’s Church. We are part of St Mary’s Church in Wales but that does not mean that you have to be a Christian to be a Cuckoo. It means ALL are welcome, whatever colour or creed.
